Obituary of George P. Wood

GEORGE P. WOOD - Beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away on December 1, 2023, in Melbourne, Florida. George will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 69 years, Mary. Cherished father to Antigone London (Marc) of Harwich, Massachusetts, Peter Wood (Lisa) of Baltimore, Maryland, Stacey Graham (Jim) of Savannah, Georgia, and Jamie Armezzani (Joe) of Germantown, Maryland. Adored grandfather of twelve and great-grandfather of nine. George was predeceased by his loving parents, Peter and Antigone Wood.

George was born in Tamaqua, Pennsylvania on March 30, 1930. He was the oldest of four, leaving behind his cherished siblings Gloria Hampilos of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, Andrew Wood of Denton, Maryland, and Maria Antonakas of Marriottsville, Maryland.

First, the Air Force and then a long career at Martin Marietta brought George and Mary across the United States, where they raised their family and made many lasting friendships. Upon retirement, they moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida, where they spent time supporting the Space Program in his work life.  They took to the seas, embarking on over 130 cruises to places around the world.  In retirement, George continued participating in many of his favorite hobbies: singing, acting in community plays, reading books and scripture during Church services, AHEPA, volunteering at annual Greek Festivals, and getting coffee weekly with the ROMEOs (Retired Old Men Eating Out).

Family and friends will be received at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church at 5965 N Wickham Road, Melbourne, Florida, on Friday, December 8, 2023, from 10:00 - 11:00 AM. The liturgy will begin at 11:00, followed by the burial at Florida Memorial Gardens at 5950 S US Highway 1, Rockledge, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church.
