Obituary of Bonnie Leies

On June 29th, 2023, Bonnie Leies of Cocoa Beach, Florida passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 95.

She was born to the late Curtis and Evelyn McCoy, June 11, 1928 in Elkton, Virginia and was one of six children. Bonnie graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth, Virginia in 1946. Bonnie was a devoted mother and wife and was very active in her community including leadership roles at the Chittum Elementary School PTA, Patrick Air Force Base Officer’s Wives Club, Cocoa Beach City Council Beautification Board, Cocoa Beach Garden Club, Cocoa Beach Women’s Club, and the Red Hat Society. Bonnie’s love of church and children was evident in her volunteer activities; she frequently volunteered at Our Saviour’s Catholic Church Christmas Bazaar and tutoring children learning to read.

Bonnie was married to the late Dr. Gerard Leies, over the course of their more 40-years of marriage they split their time between Cocoa Beach, Florida and Northern Virginia. Bonnie is survived by 4 children: Danny Hawley (wife Carol Hawley) of Portsmouth, VA; Cindy Hawley of Bloomsburg, PA, David Leies, of Cocoa Beach, FL and Caroline Leies (husband Wade Kirschner) of St Petersburg, FL. She is also survived by six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Bonnie was predeceased by her lovely daughter, Deborah Hawley Jean in 1994.

A funeral mass for Bonnie will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023, at 11am at Our Saviour’s Catholic Church in Cocoa Beach. The family requests that in lieu of sending flowers people make donations to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
