George Ruiz, MD

Obituary of George R. Ruiz, MD

George Robert Ruiz, MD, 97 of Melbourne, Florida passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, May 20, 2023. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor (Foley). Surviving are their six children: Dr. Jorge Ruiz (Stacey) of Miami, FL, John Ruiz of Fort Myers, FL, Dr. Edward Ruiz of Frankfort, IL, Kathy Bergeron (Brian) of Frankfort, IL, Marianne Weyen (Dan) of Cashiers, NC, and Tom Ruiz of Naperville, IL. In addition, he leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

George was born Jorge Roberto Ruiz on December 10, 1925 in Mexico City to Col. Tarcilo Ruiz and Ana Sobredo Ruiz. His father, a colonel in the Mexican cavalry, famously rode and fought alongside Pancho Villa in support of the Mexican government.

As a young man on Spring Break, George and his fellow medical students rented a bus and traveled from Mexico city to Niagara falls. As he would tell it, the busload of city boys passed through the Midwest states of Iowa and Illinois, astonished at the beautiful suburban homes and quaint downtowns. They marveled at newspapers and milk bottles sitting unmolested on door steps. George vowed that he would move here and raise a family with American values.

George worked hard in medical school, all the while playing soccer for Necaxa, a semi-pro soccer team. His big break came when he met a guest lecturer from the University of Iowa Medical Center, Dr. Arthur Steindler. Knowing little English, George had a friend draft a letter to Dr. Steiner asking for a job in Iowa. Steiner surprised him with an offer for a residency position that would begin in 6 weeks. George now had to become as English proficient as his letter - and quickly.

As an orthopedic surgeon, George excelled. He achieved the position of Chief of Staff at South Suburban Hospital and President or the American Fracture Association. His work ethic was nothing less than epic and, according to patients, his skills were peerless.

While in residency, he met a beautiful young nurse, Eleanor Foley, and married her on December 3, 1955. Over 66 years of marriage they were never apart, traveled the world together, and raised six children in the quaint suburban town of Flossmoor, with its trimmed lawns and American values.

George took fatherhood seriously and there was never a problem that was too big for him. His support was endless, especially with providing for the education of his children and grandchildren. He instilled a love for Mexican culture and on Sunday mornings he could be heard blaring and singing along with his favorite music before preparing a traditional breakfast for his family.

In retirement, George and Eleanor moved to Florida where they enjoyed long walks on Satellite Beach and visits from their grandchildren.

A private memorial service is scheduled.
