Obituary of Mary Cullen

COCOA BEACH Mary A. Cullen, 85, died on March 22, 2009 at Cape Canaveral Hospital after a short illness. She was the daughter of the late Garrett J. and Mary G. (Curran) Cullen. She was a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for 30 years. Mary earned a bachelor’s degree from Emmanuel College, a master’s degree from Boston College and a doctorate from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She was a professor of mathematics at Mt. Wachusett Community College and taught part time at Boston University and Northeastern University. For several years she was chairperson of Science and Technology. She was a speaker on mathematical and educational subjects, conducted numerous teacher training sessions and served on many civic and educational committees. In 1995, Mary moved to Cocoa Beach. Here, she did volunteer tutoring and was chiefly involved with St. Vincent de Paul Society at Our Saviour’s Church. Dr. Cullen is survived by five siblings in Cocoa Beach: her brother, Garrett Cullen, her sisters Rose (Robert) Manson, Ruth Cullen, Margaret (John) O’Brien and Elizabeth Cullen, as well as Audrey Muise of Woburn, Ma. And Carolyn (Gerard) Griffin of Fairfield, Ct. and twenty nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two long-time friends, Joan Scollins of Osterville, Ma. And Norrine Powers of Maynard, Ma. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, March 26th at 10:30 A.M. at Church of Our Saviour. Interment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Mary requested that donations be made to the St.Vincent de Paul Society, c/o Church of Our Saviour, 5301 N. Atlantic Ave., Cocoa Beach, Fl. 32931.
