Joan Vonderlieth

Obituary of Joan Celeste Vonderlieth

Joan Celeste Vonderlieth, age 90, passed away peacefully in her beachside Cocoa Beach home on May 7, 2024. She was born April 13, 1934, to Stanley and Elizabeth Oczechowski and raised in West Rutland, Vermont.  As a devout Catholic, Joan was part of the St Stanislaus Kostkas Church community, beginning with her baptism and following with the wedding to William J. Vonderlieth of New York on May 7,1960. She passed on her 64th wedding anniversary.

Joan was a licensed Cosmetologist in Vermont, Massachusetts , New York, and Florida from the 1950s to 1990s. She worked in many prestigious salons such as Elizabeth Arden's on Newbury Street in Boston, Mass.,as well as Helena Rubinstein's on Fifth Ave, NYC.  Her gentle, warm and caring disposition/nature made her quite successful in her craft. Loved by all, her coworkers submitted her for the Miss Rheingold beauty contest in the 1950s, in which she found herself pictured in the subways and displays in New York City.  Never one to boast, knowledge of this was only shared by family members.

Joan embraced an active lifestyle throughout her life.  Her early years she enjoyed ice skating and skiing in Vermont.  Later, boating with her children along Long Island, NY and camping through the mountains of the east coast. She moved to Cocoa Beach, Florida in the 1980s and immersed herself with the beach lifestyle; bicycling, walking and sunbathing on the beach was a daily routine.  The outdoors made her happy, either gardening, maintaining her bird feeders or just catching some rays on the porch in her final days.

Joan is survived  by her sister Teresa Fabian, Syracuse, NY., daughters, Darlene and Diane Vonderlieth, granddaughter, Faun Holley and nieces and nephews Joey, Christine, Veronica, Kimberly, Richard and Ray jr.

A Catholic Mass will be held for Joan at Our Saviours Catholic Church in Cocoa Beach on May 23, 2024 at 1pm. She is to be laid to rest alongside William Vonderlieth, her soulmate in the church's memorial gardens, a perfect ending to a true love story.
