Leo Rivera, CW3 (Ret), age 94 of Rockledge, FL died Dec. 31, 2022. He was born in Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico on April 26, 1928. He enlisted in the US Army Aug. 13, 1948 and as a recruit was sent to Germany as part of the occupation forces after WWII where he began his career as company clerk. Ten years of his 21-year career were spent in foreign service to include a tour in Okinawa, Japan, where he was assigned as the Chief of the Nuclear Bay and where he received his appointment to Chief Warrant Officer. After serving his second tour in Vietnam and eager to return to civilian life, he retired on Aug. 1, 1969. Moving to Brevard County to take the position of Assistant Director of ROTC for Brevard County Schools he went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Education and continued with BPS as a guidance counselor, spending 10 years at Rockledge High School, and 10 years at Satellite High School. Retiring from Brevard Public Schools, he returned 2 years later to work part-time for Crosswinds Youth Services where he received the Florida Network Counselor of the Year award in 1997.
He was married to Florence Kathleen Christian from Kingsport, Tennessee in 1955 for 58 years until her death in 2013. He is survived by their 4 children, Resi Wasser (Ray) of Satellite Beach; David Rivera (Vanessa) of San Tan Valley, AZ; Lorena Kidd (Jim) of Fort Myers, FL; and Julie Morris (Bryan) of Albuquerque, NM; 5 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. He will be laid to rest at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on January 20, 2023.
