Its telling that the fondest memories of elementary school I have are of Mr. Bailey and his classroom. He always used to play Gilligan's Island episodes for the class, and it got to the point where we would look forward to it so much that it became a kind of halfway point in the day that we would be anticipating every class prior. I remember a bunch of us kids gathering out on the black top to watch his bike tricks, all of us knowing he was the coolest teacher we'd ever seen. I wish I could've known him better; but after I've read these comments and heard new stories about him, it is clear that he was as fantastic a person as we kids always thought he was.

Kirk has been one of my closest friends for the past twenty five plus years. There are so many funny stories to choose from because Kirk was a character and he made funny new memories everyday. Here’s one of my favorites.
Like most teenagers, Kirk got old enough to start driving a car and got his drivers license. He started driving himself to and from school and was parking in the garage when he arrived home each day. One fateful day Kirk drove himself home from school, pulled into the driveway and into the garage. For some reason he panicked at the last minute hitting the gas pedal instead of the brake and he drove thru the wall at the back of the garage and into the family room. I believe it was his brother Scott that was home when he heard and felt the crash not knowing what had happened. Scott ran to the garage only to see his brother Kirk in a frozen state of panic still behind the wheel of the car looking straight forward with both hands on the steering wheel, his foot on the gas pedal and the tires spinning. Scott opened the car door and had to manually pull Kirk’s foot off the gas while simultaneously waking Kirk from his frozen state of panic. Thank God Kirk escaped unscathed and no one else was hurt either making this story a knee slapper. Kirk was a character and regularly made memories for the people around him.
I love you and I miss you my friend. RIP

Kirk was my daughter’s 6th grade teacher at Surfside Elementary. We moved here from Texas and Kim started with Kirk in January 2010. He was a wonderful teacher with so many incredible traits. As a brand new student he put Kimberly right at easy with his loving, gentle, and ways. His first question to her was “Do You Love Gillian’s Island? That was so Kirk.
When she graduated SBHS she invited him to her Scholarship Awards Ceremony where Kim received The Rollins College Scholarship. As she accepted the award he stood up and cheered. I have a photo of the beautiful evening that I will keep forever. As an ICU RN, death was something I dealt with daily. I don’t know how to process that Kirk is gone. We kept in touch frequently, but he fell off the radar a few months ago.
There are three things I know that Kirk loved. His daughter McKenzie, his dog Jengo and his trick bike riding. His daughter was his joy, and he was very proud of her.
To his mom Barbara, and his daughter Mckenzie my whole family sends you our love.
Kirk, I will see you again one day in the future. A donation to The Sun Coast Basset Rescue was made in your memory. Both of us sure love our four legged family members.
