Memories of Mom
Some of Pauls memories of Mom:
The Polish Bakery on Milwaukees south side:
This was before my time, but Mom had stories as a child growing up in the apartment above the bakery. Run by her mother, she would help her family out with some of the prep work and behind the cash register. She said at the peak of business there were lines out the door and around the block in the early morning.
702 Hillcrest:
At my first home in West Bend, Wisconsin we had a kitchen exhaust fan vent that went through the wall and vented cooking smells outside. Mom was a great cook and baker. The smell of fresh baked bread and fried pork chops would often fill the little neighborhood around our house, and bring me running for dinner.
We had a swing set in the back yard, and she would push me for hours right next to the raspberry bushes, over looking the Milwaukee River across the field.
She planted rhubarb next to the garage and would make a wonderful rhubarb pie
1329 Sylvan Way:
Dad and the boys created a terraced rock garden wall in the back yard, and mom spent many hours out there weeding and growing plants and vegetables.
Mom and Dad hosted bridge parties regularly at our house. Jack, Bonnie and I would love to eat the leftover party food treats the next day that Mom had made.
425 Leawood Ct Ashland, Ohio
Dad designed and built his second home here for us, and Mom decorated it. She most loved the living room gazing out at the birch trees in the back yard. I made a bird feeder at shop class in 9th grade, and she loved looking out the windows at the birds, identifying the species. She also put suet out in wire baskets to attract even more varieties. Behind the bird feeder in the woods Dad made wood chip paths where she loved to walk and plant flowers. As kids we made detour tunnels through the heavy underbrush and blackberry bushes.
1234 Westwood Lane, Manitowoc WI
This was Dads third home design, and Mom proudly decorated it. Although we had the latest kitchen automatic dishwasher, we werent allowed to use it except when company came for dinner. She had a schedule for chores (including dishes) which we dutifully followed.
Later years
While in college, I loved coming down from Tallahassee to visit in Cape Coral. There was always an apple pie waiting, and I still have her pie crust recipe. She was usually game to go on a hike or side trip to a local scenic park. One time I rented a 16 ft hobie cat to take her and Brad out sailing. It was a pretty heavy day, and we were well healed over. Mom got soaked from the spray, but clung to the rigging in the middle, while Brad and I balanced the boat to keep it from flipping. She resembled a drowned rat when we came ashore, but she talked about that day long afterwards as an adventure to remember.
Mom bought a condo on a golf course in Melbourne, where she lived as long as she could on her own. She would collect golf balls for me, which would show up at Christmas time. She told me about the giant sand hill cranes which would stalk up to the back glass porch door, and peer in at her dog Meagan. She really got a kick out of nature, but Meagan developed a nervous twitch.
At the Assisted Living facility, Mom was known for taking off on her long nature walks. There were several trails she took in the area, each time appreciating the season, watching for new growth, birds and animals.
